Why Move to Aberdeen?
A beautiful compact city, Aberdeen is located on the east coast of Scotland and is the largest seaport in north east Scotland. The city has been voted for on numerous occasions as one of the most liveable cities in Great Britain where you can still afford to buy a home.
Aberdeen is known by several nicknames; “Grey City” or “Granite City” thanks to locally quarried grey granite.
Much of the city is built with the locally sources material which sparkles like silver because of its high mica content.
In the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, many of Aberdeen’s buildings incorporated the use of its granite and still stand today, lending the city its nicknames.
Since the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s, Aberdeen has become known as the offshore oil capital of Europe, ranked in the world’s top five energy cities. It enjoys a prosperous economy and has thus evolved into one of the country’s leading business hubs.
For those with the right skills, work is not too hard to come by. Of course, the economy is based primarily around the energy industry however, other busy sectors include high technology and electronics.

Aberdeen Schools & Education
There is a good selection of schools from nursery through to secondary, with grammar schools also available in Aberdeen. The city currently houses 12 secondary schools and 54 primary schools, all of which are run by the city council.
Two notable primaries in the area include Ashley Road and Mile End Primary Schools. With regards to secondaries, Aberdeen Grammar School (founded in 1257), Harlaw Academy, Cults Academy, and Oldmachar Academy have all been preforming well and places are highly sought after.
The city is also home to two universities, the notable Robert Gordon University and the University of Aberdeen. Aberdeen’s student rate of 11.5% is higher than the national average of 7%, meaning the city certainly has a youthful buzz, adding to its attraction.
Things to do if living in Aberdeen
From its beautiful coastline to vast expanses of moorland and forests, Aberdeenshire has no lack of exciting activities to immerse yourself in. The city itself has five shopping centres, boutique and local produce shopping outlets as well as many sites of historical interest and impressive architecture.
Some great ideas and inspiration in the area include the Deeside Way, or as it is sometimes called, The Royal Deeside Line.
This is one of the newer cycling and walking trails in Grampian and is suitable for cyclists of all ability and is especially suited to families. 41 miles of track incorporates stopping points and offers stunning views along the way, it is a must visit for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
The Aberdeen Art Gallery, which opened in 1885, is a handsome granite gallery and is one of the best preserved and most charming Victorian galleries in the UK.
Its collection includes examples of Fine and Decorative Art, Maritime History exhibits as well as a record of Aberdeen’s industrial history, mainly focusing on land-based industries; these include the textile, comb and papermaking industries, engineering and the granite industry amongst others. It is a great insight not only into fine art but also the vast history of the surrounding area and is a great homage to Aberdeen.
Aberdeen is also known for its more recreational activity choices, including its annual festivals. Some of Aberdeen’s most well-known festivals include; the Jazz festival, Sound Festival, May Festival and the Look Again Visual Art & design Festival.
As well as these fantastic events, Aberdeenshire also has no less than 55 Golf courses of varying standards and sizes. One of the most famous is the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
Founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, it became the Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815. A stunning but challenging course best suited to more experienced golfers, it is a slice of golfing history.
Property Prices in Aberdeen
With affordable housing options, an ample amount of properties for sale and excellent deals to be had, Aberdeen is an incredibly attractive city for first-time buyers.
The average price for property stood at £216,971 in January 2020. This is a rise of 0.27% in the last three months (since October 2019) and an increase of 3.27% over the past 12 months. In terms of property types, flats in Aberdeen sold for an average of £151,594 and terraced houses for £208,477.
There are some very pretty neighbourhoods to choose from. The West End and Ferry Hill is where you will find more expensive homes. Old Aberdeen is highly expensive too and offers property which is priced well over £1,000,000 million.
For more modest budgets a £115,000 will enable you to purchase a two bedroomed apartment in the city centre, ideal for those wanting to be close to work.
For renters, the many oil workers and the city’s two universities make for a lively rental market. You can expect to pay an average rent of £643. Rents range from £452 for a one bedroom flat up to £1760 per month for a five-bedroom detached property.
