The town is actually called Chipping Barnet or High Barnet, mainly suburban, it forms part of the London Borough of Barnet.

The London Borough of Barnet has 86 primary schools, 22 secondary schools, 9 independents and 4 special schools.
Schools are generally very good, with many options for state primary and grammar schools that are rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Older students have a wide choice of colleges and sixth forms. Woodhouse College caters mainly for full-time students aged 16 to 18 whose primary aim is to progress to Higher Education. Entrance grade criteria are similar to other high-performing sixth forms in Barnet.
The main and most popular college in the borough is Barnet College, which is spread over 5 sites. Courses taught include academic qualifications (such as AS and A Levels), to more vocational studies such as City and Guilds courses and BTEC diplomas. The College also runs higher education courses (such as Foundation degrees) in a number of subjects.
Middlesex University has its main campus at Hendon. University College London has its teaching observatory at Mill Hill.

Green spaces: Brunswick Park, Covert Way Nature Reserve, Victoria Park, King George’s Fields, Whalebones Park and Trent Country Park.
Leisure Centres: Hendon Leisure, Finchley Leisure Centre, Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre, Burnt Oak Leisure Centre, New Barnet Leisure Centre.
Golf Clubs: The Shire Golf Club, Dyrham Country Park, South Herts Golf Club, Trent Park Golf Club, North Middlesex Golf Club, Old Ford Manor Golf Club.
Shopping: The Spires shopping centre.

It is possible to buy a three-bedroom home in the suburb of Cockfosters from £450,000.
Desirable areas to buy are in the Hadley Green and Monken Hadley neighbourhoods.
Sitting in a conservation area they have the benefit of both rural and town living. The downside is that the average cost of a property in this location is £1,990,000.
Totteridge Common is where the crazy expensive homes sit. Here you will not get much change from £12,000,000.
Renting in Barnet is very popular but again, not cheap at an average of £2,366. However, one-bedroom studios start at £602pcm and for a family sized home you would need to budget for around £1900pcm.
