Working in Basingstoke
Basingstoke was chosen to accommodate part of the London ‘overspill’ as part of the Greater London Plan in 1944. Formerly it was a small market town which was recorded in the Domesday Book. It remained a small market town until the 1950s.
During the 1960’s however, it began to expand rapidly. This expansion was due in part to its location which offers easy access to other towns and cities in the region; London 48 miles, Southampton 30 miles, Reading 16 miles and 19 miles from the county town of Winchester.
Nicknamed “Doughnut City” or “Roundabout City” because of the number of roundabouts in the town which aid a rapid road network.
Today, it is seen as a prosperous town, it enjoys an above-average standard of living and low unemployment.
It is an economic centre, and the location of some notable companies; the UK headquarters of Sun Life Financial of Canada, The Automobile Association, ST Ericsson, GAME, Motorola and Sony Professional Solutions (Europe).
