Like so many of London’s other now busy areas, until the coming of the railway in 1857, Beckenham was just a small village , now it is home to almost 47,000.

Several train stations serve the town and its surrounding area with Beckenham Junction providing services into London Bridge every 30 minutes, taking 35 minutes, and to Orpington every 15 minutes, taking 7 minutes to Bromley South and 17 minutes to Orpington.
The town’s busy high street contains many restaurants and upmarket chains, and it is a popular local hub for shopping.
There is a particularly attractive vibe about the place. By day, you can enjoy the rich café scene and the farmers’ market, and by night the array of superb restaurants and the hub of festivals and concerts held in Beckenham Green.
There is a six-screen Odeon multiplex cinema in Beckenham High Street. Beckenham Theatre Centre in Bromley Road is one of the UK’s smallest theatres, with 47 seats and a busy amateur programme.
It is not just ordinary folk who have been attracted to Beckenham over the years.
Famous past residents include the children’s author Enid Blyton, Former British Prime Minister John Major, singer and actress Julie Andrews and the comedian Bob Monkhouse.
While the most noteworthy musician associated with the area would be David Bowie who lived at 42 Southend Road from1969 to 1973.

Beckenham Schools & Education
Finding a local school which is performing well is understandably an important factor if you are new to the area.
As there are so many schools both state and private in Beckenham, and the wider area if you are happy to travel a bit further, finding a suitable one for your child should not prove problematic.
Within Beckenham itself, there are 27 state schools consisting of a mix of primary and secondary. Several schools are religiously affiliated and two are specifically for either boys or girls.
However, schools who have performed exceptionally well according to Ofsted include Clare House Primary School and Harris Primary Academy.
For secondaries Harris Academy Beckenham received the coveted overall rating of “outstanding”. Ofsted reported that “pupils’ behaviour is outstanding.
Their conduct is exemplary and contributes to a mature learning environment”. Further adding “pupils progress is outstanding across a range of subjects and for all groups of pupils. Pupils’ attainment is well above the national average”.
Older students in the district tend to choose Bromley College of Further & Higher Education after leaving school.
A large college, it is a partner college of six of the twelve schools of the University of Greenwich. Its largest campus is in the nearby town of Bromley, and others are situated in Erith, Plumstead and Orpington.
Things to do in Beckenham
The historic county of Kent is known for its abundance of green areas.
Dotted around the borough are a large number of small and some large open spaces, well used by local residents and visitors to the area as well.
Just a 30-minute drive from Beckenham and you arrive at the Lullingstone Country Park. A former deer park of a large estate, it was later sold to become an open-space and woodland park. The park and Lullingstone Castle are a Scheduled Monument, and an area of 66.4-hectare is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest Kent.
Like most towns of its size, Beckenham has several leisure organisations and a host of clubs you can join such as golf, tennis, cricket, rugby, football, hockey and running clubs.
The local Odeon cinema has six screens and is a grade II listed building. The Beckenham Festival of Music & Dancing takes place every November.
A buzzing high street attracts shoppers from across the Borough. Beckenham has a bustling high street with a great assortment of local amenities and some great restaurants to explore many now with outdoor seating areas so totally Covid safe.
No matter what your interests may be, whether you prefer the hubbub of the city, or the quiet of the country, Beckenham is ideally located to get out of town or into the city centre.
Beckenham Property
Thanks to its rich history, Beckenham has a patchwork of grand period properties. For those with more contemporary tastes there has been plenty of re-development so many new homes are also available.
Prices are more affordable than other locations across London with the average price paid during the last year of £554,550.
Popular areas to buy include homes situated in the boroughs Park Langley conservation area, for obvious reasons.
If you are looking for cheaper options, try Westgate Road. On the doorstep of two train stations, Beckenham Junction and Ravensbourne. You can expect to have to pay around £200,000 for a one-bedroom flat here.
Larger three-bedroom homes are for sale starting at £325,000 upwards to £1,000,000.
The most expensive home on the market is located in the prestigious Park Langley area. Offering 7 bedrooms, a massive garden and gated for extra security, all for the sum of £2,000,000, on the surface expensive, however, markedly cheaper than most inner London equivalents.
