Why Move to Belfast
Belfast was awarded city status a long time ago in 1888. A compact city, with a very rich and interesting history, Belfast is located on the banks of the River Lagan on the east cost of the island of Ireland. It is the capital and largest city in Northern Ireland.
This once turbulent region has blossomed into a vibrant, modern metropolitan city with world-class arts and culture, increasing diversity, and a fast-growing economy.
One of the things that makes Belfast such a desirable place to relocate to is its living costs, the city is way more affordable than most, particularly when compared to London. Another draw is its geography. Surrounded by mountains that create a micro-climate conducive to horticulture, Belfast contains 3,000 acres of parks, many of them forested.
Remaining part of the UK, Belfast retains the British pound as its currency. However, the Irish culture is very evident within the city, and creates a unique mix of British and Irish culture. This diversity is evident in foods, accents, and even road signs often being in both the English and Irish languages.
The city enjoys a robust transport network consisting of two train stations, Belfast Central and Belfast Great Victoria Street.
Two airports, George Best Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport also service the city. Regular ferry services to the UK, Isle of Man, Douglas, Cairnryan and Liverpool Birkenhead and Scotland. Along with a network of motorways including the main M1 and M3.
Made famous, and infamous throughout modern history is so many ways; The World’s Most legendary ship, The Titanic, was constructed in the city. C.S Lewis was born here, and the nearby countryside helped inspire The Chronicles of Narnia. Some of the filming for Game of Thrones also took place in and around the city.
There is a massive choice of places to eat, drink and shop. Big-name stores can be found at both Victoria Square and Castle Court shopping centres. For more exclusive shopping, head to Lisburn Road, dubbed the ‘Bond Street of Belfast’. It is full of boutiques, delis, and classy restaurants.
Belfast is brimming with all that you could want in a city; easy to navigate, an ever-expanding economy, cheap living with great neighbourhoods, and lots to keep you entertained.
Schools & Education
The education in Belfast is another one of the things that makes the city such a great place to live, especially if you have or are planning to have a family.
Although integrated education is increasing, Northern Ireland still operates a highly segregated education system and offers schooling for both protestant and catholic children.
Unlike most areas of the United Kingdom, in the last year of primary school, many children take entrance examinations for grammar schools. There are plenty of schools to choose from including primary, secondary, grammar and private education facilities.
The universities are where the Belfast education sector really comes into its own. Home to two universities: Ulster University, and Queens University. Queens University has become highly respected throughout the UK and ranks highly on the score tables. It even attracts students globally, which is testament to its success.
Things to do in Belfast
Being so compact makes exploring the city easy. Almost everything is within walking distance. Bursting with culture there is an abundance of museums, theatres, and not to mention the Northern Irish parliament buildings which are a spectacle to look at in themselves.
One of the top attractions is the Titanic museum. With nine galleries to explore telling the story of RMS Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her famous maiden voyage and tragic end. Much of the museum is interactive with many features including diving to the depth of the ocean to explore where RMS Titanic now rests.
Belfast holds a range of festivals and events all year round such as the Titanic Maritime Festival, the Sounds of Belfast, the Belfast Pride Parade, or the annual Festival of light at Mount Stewart.
A variety of public parks give residents the chance to exercise, walk and cycle and are great places to take children to burn off extra energy. One of the most popular green spaces is the Botanic Gardens which occupies 28 acres. A restful oasis to the south of the city, featuring a children’s playground, beautiful walks and a bowling green.
Botanic Gardens is often used for events, such as band recitals, concerts and opera performances.
Investment in Belfast’s riverside has created a new and stunning waterfront area, complete with vibrant bars, restaurants, entertainment venues and contemporary apartment blocks.
Outside the city, are beaches, day trips to nearby castles, Bushmills Distillery, and the Giant’s Causeway.
