Why Move to Bexley?
Known as the Thames Gateway, the borough of Bexley is situated on the south east edge of Greater London in the beautiful county of Kent.
It was once just a small village until in the early 1800s when the arrival of the railway which made it a much more viable and accessible town. Since then a steady influx of residents have slowly increased the population, this growth is still evident today as more and more people opt to move out of the busy capital to quieter suburbs and more economically priced property.
Bexley is one of the greenest boroughs in London with over 100 parks and open spaces and enjoys a 5 mile stretch along the river Thames with the views that come with it.
Another of its appeals is that there are direct train services carrying commuters to a variety of London’s stations; Blackheath, London Bridge, Waterloo East, Cannon Street and Charing Cross.
Bexley’s location also offers quick access to the A2 and M25, all of these factors combine to make Bexley a highly desirable commuter hub.
The bustling centre of town has something for everyone, with bars, restaurants, delis and boutiques creating an intimate village vibe.
For a more comprehensive shopping experience, 2 miles away is the Broadway Shopping Centre, which has become Bexleyheath’s premier shopping destination, with more than 60 stores and 1,200 car parking spaces.
If you are relocating to find work, the good news is that according to Bexley Council (https://www.bexley.gov.uk). “The employment rate of those living within Bexley has traditionally been higher than that of London, and often higher than Great Britain as a whole”.
The cosy town of Bexley has so many positives it’s no wonder it has become one of the most in-demand neighbourhoods in Greater London.
Things to do in Bexley
Apart from the obvious attractions of living so close to the city of London and all its world-famous attractions, Bexley has some lovely attractions of its own:
The nearby Hall Place is a popular tourist attraction and boasts 65 acres of award-winning gardens, a museum, a riverside café and restaurant as well as playing host to various events and festivals every year.
Another stunning nearby location to visit is the Red House, a wonderful arts and crafts property which was once home to the designer and socialist William Morris. It is situated just off of Red House Lane and is open to the public.
Danson Splash Park is another beautiful place to spend the day, with plenty of different activities for even the littlest of visitors to enjoy.
It is extremely popular in the summer months. It also has a huge green space for playing ball games or just exploring. There is a small kiosk and plenty of picnic areas too.
Bexley Schools & Education
The majority of Bexleyheath parents send their children to the local state schools, with such an extensive array of options in the close vicinity it is one of the best areas across the whole of Greater London for choice of education.
Although all primary schools in the area have been judged as “good” by Ofsted, three of the best are considered to be; Bursted Wood, Barrington and Upton primaries.
Secondary education is provided by two Catholic comprehensives; St Catherine’s (girls, ages 11 to 16) and St Columba’s (boys, ages 11 to 16), both judged to be “good”. The nearby Bexleyheath Academy is a mixed school, state funded senior school but was unfortunately rated as inadequate following its last Ofsted inspection.
There is also access to three selective grammar schools in close vicinity to Bexley, which are all judged to be “outstanding” by Ofsted; Townley, Beths and Bexley Grammars.
Bexley Property
With regards to property types, the choice is comprehensive and spans 1930s semi-detached homes and conversion apartments in period buildings through to cosy cottages and large Arts & Craft-style houses.
Head to the centre of town if you are looking for a Victorian home. Parkhurst Road in Old Bexley is a road of fine red-brick Victorian detached houses. However, most local houses date from the Thirties and although they offer buyers plenty of space, they tend to be rather dated. This negative makes Bexleyheath an affordable spot.
Plenty of new buyers have been fuelled by TV home renovation shows and have given their homes imaginative modern makeovers whilst also increasing them in value.
As of January 2020, Zoopla has 1126 listings for the Bexley area. You can buy a one bedroomed flat for £98,000, a terraced for around £215,000 and a detached for a guide price of £330,500.
Sought after areas to buy include Blendon and Baldwyns Park but the most expensive homes are in Glenshiel Road where you will pay over £1 million for a large detached property.
Statistics as per Zoopla estimates – January 2020.
