Why Move to Bromley
The epitome of middle-class suburbia, Bromley offers a lot for those looking to relocate to this smart south eastern town in Greater London.
Situated a few miles south of London, just inside the M25, the town gives the feel of a market town rather than a suburb of London. Seen as a rather affluent area, with average household incomes slightly higher than the national average, Bromley is an enviable location for both living and working.
It has a hard to resist the winning combination of good-value homes, exclusive shops, well regarded schools and no less than six train stations offering fast trains to all London mainline stations.
Bromley also has an extensive bus service which runs to many of the surrounding areas including Croydon, Lewisham, Crystal Palace, Greenwich and Bexleyheath.
Identified in the London Plan as one of the 13 metropolitan centres of Greater London, Bromley forms a major retail and commercial centre for the region and is well placed for those in the job market.
Although the town as it is today has been modernised and updated over the years, historically it was a small market town, chartered in 1158, when it was an ancient parish in the county of Kent. Like so many towns it grew with the development of the railways.
Although it is technically part of London, Bromley is pretty much a self-contained town complete with a large retail centre, a number of theatres and a cinema.
The bustling town centre has undergone a relatively recent facelift having been awarded several £million in funding in order to help maintain its position as a great destination in south London.
With ongoing building work, including the £90 million site at St Mark’s Square, the area is set to only increase in attraction.
There’s always time for a bit of shopping, and the Glades Shopping Centre is the place to be. With over 100 stores, cafés & restaurants, you are sure to find just the thing you’re looking for.
Schools & Education
Without doubt one of the utmost priorities for parents relocating is the quality of local schools.
As you would expect for an area which has an upmarket reputation there are many independent schools situated within the Borough including Eltham College and Bromley High.
State education provision is mostly very good with a large proportion of primary schools managing to gain an “outstanding” status from Ofsted following their most recent inspections.
The “outstanding” Riverside School meets the needs of pupils with a wide range of different complex needs, including social and communication difficulties, as well as pupils with sensory, physical, medical and/or additional learning difficulties.
Among the high performing secondaries is St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Grammar School. An all-boys school which Ofsted reported that “All students make outstanding progress, in all years, across a wide range of subjects, including English and mathematics. Their GCSE, AS and A level results are very high”
Bromley College of Further & Higher Education is a partner college of six of the twelve schools of the University of Greenwich. It is home to a range of excellent facilities from industry-standard workshops and fully equipped science laboratories through to a £4.5m sports centre.
