    Why Move to Chelsea?

Widely considered the centre of London, Chelsea is located in a very wealthy area indeed.

The word Chelsea means ‘chalk wharf’. Of Anglo-Saxon in origin, historically there was a thriving Anglo-Saxon community based in the area.

The Ancient Parish subsequently became a Metropolitan Borough before being joined with Kensington in 1965, to form the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The district lies on the borders South Kensington and Knightsbridge and Fulham to the west, plus the Thames River to its south and Belgravia to the east.

Chelsea has earned itself a reputation for opulence due to its incredibly high property prices, luxury hotels, Michelin-starred dining and top-notch shopping.

The area is also home to the world-renowned Harrods department store, whilst King’s Road and Sloane Street provide their fair share of high-end retail opportunities too.

It certainly is an iconic destination and also provides residents with plenty to do and see.

Surprisingly for such a large city, one of the most appealing things about moving to Chelsea is that it is a very low crime area. In fact, the area does not even rank on the London Metropolitan Police Crime Figures.

With 6 beautiful parks close by, almost one for every day of the week and all London’s popular attractions just a quick hop away, there is no time to be bored.

The list of celebrities, past and present who have called the area home is endless among them are Freddie Mercury, Agatha Christie, AA Milne, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Sir Laurence Olivier, and Vivian Leigh.

Whether its for work or pleasure, you can actually walk into London however, public transport is excellent. Although Chelsea does not have its own tube station, the closest one is Sloan Square, offering frequent services all over the city.

Chelsea Flower Show was first held here in 1913 and continues to attract hundreds of thousands of keen gardeners each year.

It is also home to one of England’s most successful and one of the richest football clubs, Chelsea FC.

For those who can afford it, Chelsea is undoubtedly among one of the best places in the whole of London to live. Safe, multicultural, a great base to get to all areas of the city and set in attractive surroundings.

    Chelsea Schools & Education

Another of Chelsea’s great attributes is its education provision.

Because Chelsea is such an affluent area, there is absolutely no shortage of high-performing fee-paying schools.

21 private schools are dotted around the district teaching children from nursery age right through to 18 years.

To cater for children from other nationalities, there are also several European schools such as the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle. A French co-educational primary and secondary independent day school.

That said, state schools perform very nicely too. 6 out of the 9 local state schools are said to be “outstanding” and the remainder are rated as “good” by Ofsted, quite an achievement.

Of course, with everything so easily reached older students have a huge choice of both further education colleges and universities.

One mile from Chelsea is the prestigious Imperial College London (legally named Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine). Established by Royal Charter in 1907, the college focuses exclusively on science, technology, medicine, and business. The main campus is located in South Kensington.

Imperial has an international community, with more than 59% of students from outside the UK and 140 countries represented on campus.

    Things to do in Chelsea

Finding yourself with spare time to fill opens up a world of opportunity when you live in Chelsea.

There is so much to do, see and experience, it can be overwhelming. Here are just a few of the things on hand to entice residents and visitors:

    Royal Albert Hall – www.royalalberthall.com

    Natural History Museum – www.nhm.ac.uk

    Saatchi Gallery – http://www.saatchigallery.com

    National Army Museum – www.nam.ac.uk

    Westminster Cathedral – www.westminstercathedral.org.uk

A trip to King’s Road, one of the district’s major thoroughfares, is fast catching up with Bond Street as one of London’s premier shopping destinations, Home to Harrods and housing a variety of high-end fashion or jewellery boutiques such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, and so many more.

Green space is everywhere. Ranelagh Gardens, Chelsea Physic Garden, Eaton Square Gardens, and the largest open area Hyde Park are all well with walking distance of Chelsea.

Within a quick tube stop or two other major attractions including the London Eye, Madame Tussauds and Big Ben are easily reached.

    Chelsea Property

Much of Chelsea and neighbouring Knightsbridge is still owned by Earl Cadogan, through the Cadogan Estates.

Dig deep is the mantra here. Prime residential real estate does not come cheap. There are over 1100 homes for sale at an average cost of £2,044,527.

Flats in Chelsea sell for an average of £1,261,080, terraced houses for £3,916,841 and semi-detached homes £5,244,683. This is according to the current Zoopla estimates.

There are cheaper options away from the main areas. It is possible to purchase a small studio flat from £200,000 or for something a little bigger, a two-bedroom flat is for sale in Uverdale Road for £240,000.

Many of the high-end homes are in demand with overseas buyers, particularly Americans and they are willing to pay the massive price tags these homes demand.

Belgravia, Knightsbridge and homes along Fulham are all known to be expensive but, the most expensive home for sale at the moment is in Carlyle Square. A 5-bedroom mansion for the princely sum of £21,000,000.

An ever-increasing option is shared ownership. The Government has built in a proviso with new build developments ensuring a percentage of properties sold are given over to some kind of help to buy scheme, thereby ensuring local people get a chance to get onto the property ladder.

London is developing constantly, and Zoopla are advertising 20 such developments around the city. Click here for further information.
