Situated in the Borough of Broxbourne, lying entirely within the London Metropolitan Area and Greater London Urban Area, Cheshunt mixes the leafy suburbs of Hertfordshire with all the amenities and splendour of the capital on your doorstop.
Cheshunt made history as the birth place of the first monorail for passengers, known as the Cheshunt Railway, which was a horse drawn carriage on rails which transported children to school. Flash forward to the present and Cheshunt continues to be praised for its excellent commuter credentials, being conveniently placed less than half an hour’s journey into Liverpool Street Station and 40 minutes into Charing Cross station.
The town is a great mix of traditional and modern life, with plenty of shops and restaurants and the latest sporting facilities. It is the birthplace of Lotus Cars and was once the headquarters of the UK’s largest supermarket chain, Tesco until 2016.
It’s not all urban sprawl either. The town’s Bury Green neighbourhood was once the home of singer Cliff Richard and is characterised by a number of green wedges occupied by uses including schools, playing fields and allotments. The area is home to a number of large Victorian detached houses and provides quick access to the main train station.
Transport Connections
Connections in Cheshunt are good. There is a train station in the town and both Theobalds Grove and Waltham Cross are within two miles of the town centre. They all fall within the London Oyster Zone 8, with trains running to Liverpool Street and Stratford. The town is located on the A10 (known locally as the Great Cambridge Road), which provides links to the M25. London City Airport is 15 miles by car and provides flights to most European cities.
Schools & Education
Cheshunt has a good range of school and nurseries to choose from. Primary schools are generally of a high standard, and Flamstead End School has received an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report.
Secondaries are more mixed. Goffs School has been rated as one of the best in the area having been rated as ‘good’ following its last Ofsted inspection, while others have been told to make a number of improvements.

Things to Do in Cheshunt
Having the capital city of London so close by offers a wealth of activities for all ages and interests. However, the town itself has some interesting visitor attractions too.
Cheshunt is ideally located close to Lee Valley Country park, a 10,000-acre 26 miles long linear park, west of the River Lea, which provides easy access to cycling paths, boating, rafting, angling and all manner of other outdoors activities.
Paradise Wildlife Park is a fantastic place to take the kids to meet lions, tigers, monkeys, zebras, tapirs, reptiles, birds and more. Paradise is unique as visitors have the opportunity to touch and feed many of the animals and it is widely regarded as the most interactive zoo in the UK.
The Brookfield Centre has a good range of shopping facilities including Boots, Argos, River Island, Next and Marks & Spencer. Children can enjoy Paradise Wildlife Park and Lee Valley White Water Centre. There is a Marriott hotel in the centre of town, providing hotel accommodation and a restaurant.

The public 18-hole golf course, rugby and cricket clubs have been in the area for a long time and play a crucial role in creating jobs in the town.
Historically Cheshunt was known for its nursery industry. It was at the forefront of new growing techniques undertaken in huge green houses. Today, a small number of nursery trades survives to the west of the town.

Inland Homes are working with the council to deliver a new regeneration scheme for Broxbourne. Cheshunt Lakeside is a designated site outlined in Broxbourne’s draft local plan and forms a key part of Broxbourne Council’s strategy to deliver new homes and economic growth in the area.
If approved, the development will help to drive economic growth for the area, providing 1,000 new jobs on the completed site and another 250 in construction.
The New Homes Bonus Funding will help local projects and a projected £28m in additional spend by new residents will help to support local businesses and services.
