    Why Move to Colchester

As Britain’s first Roman city, Colchester enjoys a varied and interesting history with links to riots and sieges. In later years it became an army barracks town and in 1884 the town even experienced an earthquake measuring at 4.7 magnitude on the Richter scale! Thankfully in modern times, Colchester is a lot more peaceful and is considered to be one of the safest places to live in the UK.

Neatly nestled in an enviable position on the door step of Dedham Dale, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Colchester’s proximity to the sea and stunning Essex countryside make it an excellent place to escape from all the pressures of working life. Its excellent train connections render it a viable commuter hub also. By rail you can reach London in under an hour, Ipswich in 20 minutes and Chelmsford in 25 minutes. Colchester is an incredibly well connected city with Stanstead airport just 30 miles away.

In terms of working opportunities, Colchester has a lot going for it with the cathedral city fast becoming a tech hub not just the East but the UK at large. Owing to key investments in the digital infrastructure Colchester is one of the fastest connected locations across the EU (top 11%) and is fast becoming a magnet for creative, digital and IT businesses. The city is also attracting disillusioned London renters and frustrated first time buyers with its wealth of fashionable new developments. In 2015/16 the build rate accounted for 15% of all new housing in the entire county.

Colchester boasts a fantastic range of local amenities, good schools and attractions, including one of the best zoos in the country. Whether you’re an oysters and wine connoisseur or a sunbed dweller, there’s a lifestyle for just about everyone in this burgeoning market town.

    Working in Colchester

Traditionally, the towns first main industry was wool which was in great demand and exported worldwide. Leather was also important in Colchester’s early economic development along with grain, and its famous oysters. In the latter part of the 19th century, engineering became the mainstay of the economy and paved the way for the steam engine.

Today Colchester and the surrounding area is currently undergoing significant regeneration. Eastern parts of the UK are growing faster than any other area and it has been predicted that around 15,000 new employment opportunities are set to be created in line with this regeneration.  As well as employment opportunities in the military such as engineering, logistics and medical professions, other areas of work include accountancy, health, legal services and building surveyance.

Perhaps the biggest development however is the town’s emergence as a tech hub for the UK, capable of challenging Cambridge, Edinburgh and other major UK cities for the mantle of digital innovator. Showcasing so called ‘smart city’ innovations and with keys strengths in marketing, gaming, digital media and data analytics, it is hoped key infrastructure investments will further unlock growth and job opportunities in the area.

    General Information

Once you have relocated to your new home in Colchester, there is a whole host of important things you need to organise. Below is some practical information which may prove helpful.

    Things to do in Colchester

The town is full of historical intrigue. The only known Roman Circus is in Colchester, complete with its very own chariot-racing arena, which was discovered in 2005 and is believed to have been built in the early 2nd century AD.

Colchester Zoo is listed as the 11th best zoo in the world with hundreds of animals, insects, birds and much more to explore up close and personal. The zoo offers daily displays and educational activities for children of all ages and is an excellent place to come to and share a picnic.

For a touch of retail therapy, the town centre has historic lanes lined with boutique outlets, as well as some modern contemporary shopping arcades too. Being a historical market town, in the centre you will find its regular Friday and Saturday market. Here you can buy items such as hand-crafted jewellery, giftware, fashion, hardware, CDs and records. For the foodies, the market has fresh fish, bakery and meat stalls and plenty of street food such as Spanish, Caribbean and of course, the good old Yorkshire pudding.

For a seaside escape, the coast is a mere 20 minutes away. Walton-on-the-Naze offers a great day out with the family. The pier was erected in 1830 and is one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. It remains a popular attraction to this day, with amusements and funfair rides in a hangar-type building.
