Downham Market (or Downham) as the locals call it, is situated on the edge of the Fens and the River Great Ouse, in the county of Norfolk. It lies around 40 miles from Norwich and 11 miles from King’s Lynn. It is a market town and there has been a settlement in the area as far back as Saxon times.

Downham was an agricultural centre, developing as a local market for the produce of the Fens with a bridge across the Ouse. During the Middle Ages, it was famed for its butter market and also hosted a notable horse fair. The market is now held Fridays and Saturdays in the town hall car park. The town is nicknamed Gingerbread Town, due to the colour of the carrstone from which many of the buildings are made.

The Fens offer a host of outdoor activities to enjoy. Walking, cycling, birdwatching and fishing. The Fens River Way is an extremely popular attraction especially in the summer. No matter what the season there is always something interesting to see. Stop off at one of the many pubs dotted along the route for some refreshment or a spot of lunch.
