Sitting on the south coast of the UK, Gosport is a Borough town which forms part of the county of Hampshire. There has been a settlement in the area since Anglo Saxon times.
Until relatively recently, Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth.
The town is very proud of its naval roots and the navy still maintains its presence with HMS Sultan, a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base all of which are currently still operational in the town.
Not only does the area have access to acres of green space, as you would expect from a town situated on the coast, it also provides plenty of leisure activities connected to the sea.
Gosport boasts three marinas, which are home to hundreds of vessels from small rowing boats to luxurious mega yachts.
The Gosport peninsula has 17 miles of waterfront on Portsmouth Harbour and The Solent and is a maritime playground for all. Therefore, although an urban centre its residents can enjoy waterside, beach and countryside living, often literally on their doorstep.
According to Gosport City Council approximately 18,200 people commute out of Gosport for work to Fareham, Southampton, Portsmouth, and other large towns located nearby.
The main employers are the Office for National Statistics, Eaton Aerospace Limited and Gosport Council.
Gosport is easily to get to and from. The city of Portsmouth lies 12 miles away, but just a short 5-minute hop by ferry, whilst the large City of Southampton is 20 miles away.
The main M27 motorway offers routes along the coast east and west and London is under two hours by road. Ferries and catamarans run regularly to the Isle of Wight (20 minutes), France, Channel Islands and Bilbao.
The towns reputation was once that of a rather dowdy and run-down location, but Gosport has experienced many changes and in recent years has shaken off this negative view.
New residential developments have been constructed and improved facilities provided creating a great place to reside and work.
Gosport Schools & Education
Making sure your children are accepted into a good school is of the utmost importance so its good to know that Gosport has access to some great schools.
Of the closest seven state primaries in the town, six have been rated as “good” following their latest inspections whilst Alverstoke Community Infant School managed to land the most coveted honour of being rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted.
The “outstanding” secondary St Edmund’s Catholic School is the only high school in the area to be awarded the highest standard by Ofsted with several other secondaries having been rated as “good”.
Highly regarded independents include Portsmouth High School, Mayville High School and the renowned Portsmouth Grammar School, the oldest school in the region, founded in 1732 by William Smith, Mayor of Portsmouth and Physician to its Garrison.
The nearest university is in Portsmouth. An award-winning university ranked 25th out of 125 in the Guardian University Guide 2019 and offers students hundreds of undergraduate and graduate courses across a huge range of subjects.
Things to do in Gosport
Gosport has a great range of attractions, activities, events, and places to visit.
Getting out and about is what most people like to do with their spare time, especially those with young children.
Gosport’s fantastic location means you are within a convenient walk or short car ride to some beautiful beaches and opportunities to stroll along the waterfront or meander through the Alver Valley and Wildgrounds.
Keen sailors have long since known about Gosport’s links with the ocean. The annual world-class event, Festival of the Sea draws thousands of visitors each year eager to participate in the music, carnivals and watch the around 1000 ships of every type take to the water.
Whilst maritime history lovers revel in the region’s nautical attractions. Portsmouth’s historical dockyard is a veritable treasure trove highlighting the importance of England’s naval past.
A visit to HMS Victory is a must. Incredibly interesting, it highlights the difficult conditions sailors endured whilst in battle and the day-to-day confines of life on the ship.
Close by is the busy Lee-on-the-Solent seafront. It has a children’s play area, a skate park, seafront cafes and restaurants and plenty of places to get an ice cream!
Away from the beach is Gosport Leisure Park with its swimming pools, sports hall, health & fitness studio, dance studio, 5-a-side football pitches and a crèche/soft play area.
Outlet shopping at its best can be found at Gunwharf Quays. It is the South coasts leading designer shopping outlet and home to over 90 famous brands with up to 60% off retail prices. Gunwharf is also home to a cinema and a variety of restaurants, many of which overlook the marina and enjoy alfresco dining during the summer.
Gosport Property
Having recently been attracting significant new housing investment, the Gosport area can offer residents an attractive mix of old and modern housing options in a range of different locations.
Alverstoke Village is where you will find some lovely examples of Georgian homes whilst Priddy’s Hard and Royal Clarence Yard will suit those searching for a stylish waterfront residence.
As for prices, you can expect to pay an average of £232,772 for a home in Gosport however prices start from £60,000 for a one-bedroom retirement property up to £775,000 for a “wow” factor eight bedroomed Georgian townhouse.
