Why Move to Isle of Wight?

Sitting in the English Channel, the Isle of Wight has a warm, mild climate and is one of the sunniest areas in the British Isles. The largest and second-most populous island in England is separated by the Solent, around 2 miles from the mainland of Hampshire.

Newport, at the head of the Medina estuary, is the island’s main town, and Cowes, at the Medina’s mouth, is the principal port and an internationally renowned yachting centre. The region is also home to Queen Victoria’s much beloved Osbourne House.

There have been several attempts to erect a bridge to connect the island to the south coast, thankfully this has never been approved. It is the fact that it is an island which makes it so unique.

Living on the Isle of Wight is like a step back in time. Its vintage vibe and an old-fashioned seaside resorts have attracted visitors for hundreds of years. The clean air of Ventnor Bay, on the south side of the island was where many people with tuberculosis were sent to recuperate!

Although still primarily a tourist destination with an average of around two million people holidaying here each year, many people choose to move to the island permanently. Life is noticeably of a slower pace. There are no motorways, no inner-city problems and a low crime rate, all of which attribute to its relocation popularity.

There are lots of summer festivals, carnivals, and events as well as miles of beautiful beaches, 500 miles of public footpath, interesting wildlife.

The summer is longer and warmer with 500 hours a year more sunshine compared to London and anywhere else in the UK. This means you can really get the best out of the islands wonderful and diverse landscape and abundant sandy beaches.

What is more, you can get anywhere within 25 minutes from the centre of the island and there is much to explore. Stunning coastline, gorgeous countryside, vibrant events, and award-winning attractions and historical sites of interest all add to the islands allure.

Everything you need is here, plus, all the usual facilities such as large supermarkets, schools, a hospital, dentists, cinemas, a bowling alley etc.
Once here, you really do not have to visit the mainland at all!

Isle of Wight Schools & Education

Most of the larger towns have their own primaries, the advantage for schools on the Island is that classes are generally much smaller than those on mainland UK.

There are 69 local education authority-maintained schools on the Isle of Wight, and two independent schools both of these are in the town of Ryde and both have day, weekly or full board options.

State educated children aged between 11-18 filter into one of the five secondary schools which serve the population.

The Isle of Wight College is the only Further Education option and is located on the outskirts of Newport.

Students have the opportunity to travel to Portsmouth or Southampton Colleges should they wish to. The closest Universities are also located in either Southampton or Portsmouth.

Things to do in Isle of Wight

Having been a tourist destination for so many years, the Isle of Wight has myriad of things to entertain all ages.

Sailing is one of the island’s big draws and passions. Cowes is extremely busy in the summer months with Cowes Week featuring highly on most serious yachting calendars.

A week of racing regattas which culminates with a massive fire work display earns millions for the economy of the island. Held in the beginning of August each year it is a real highlight.

With over 500 miles of footpaths, and 60 miles of coastline, the island is great for walkers, too – the Walking Festival in May is the biggest event of its kind in the UK.

Some of the best beaches are Ryde’s Appley Beach, Seaview’s Seagrove, St Helen’s at Bembridge and the wide strip of sand that runs from Sandown down to Shanklin. These places also have some great restaurants and cafes which also get remarkably busy in the summer months.

Keeping the children happy is important and many attractions are aimed at making this happen. Blackgang Chine makes for a fun day out. Set on the cliff tops, with stunning sea-views, and filled with an eclectic mix of attractions, magical theme worlds and exciting rides.

Go wild at Tapnell Farm Park located close to Yarmouth. Meet the resident animals, spend time enjoying the play barn and get even closer to nature at the farmyard barn.

Get a taste of the Isle of Wight’s history and culture by visiting one of its museums, galleries, and historic sites. Carisbrooke Castle dates from Norman times and brings history alive to many thousands of visitors each year.

Yarmouth Castle, the Needles Old Battery and Fort Victoria, will be of interest to the military historian as well as the casual visitor.

Possibly the Island’s most recognisable landmarks is the Needles Rocks and lighthouse, close to which is The Needles Landmark Attraction full of things to entertain the whole family.

Whatever your age, interest, or budget there will be something for you on the lovely Isle of Wight.

    Isle of Wight Property

There was once a very distinct difference in the price of property compared to the mainland. The island was a much cheaper option. However, this has all changed with the current average cost of a property now standing at £271,369; higher than the national average of £231,855.

With around 1500 homes for sale, the Island offers a real mix of neighbourhoods as well as an eclectic collection of property styles. Quiet sleepy villages where you need a car to get anywhere, or larger busier towns such as Ryde, Shanklin, Newport and Sandown.

It is still possible to buy an attractive thatched cottage, a rural retreat or grand Victorian villa as well as a home on a new build estate such as the popular Hawthorne Meadows development in Cowes. In fact, Cowes is a popular spot for commuters as it is here that the ferries dock to and from the city of Southampton.

As a guide to prices, detached homes sell for an average of £380,505, Semi’s £240,515, Terraced homes £207,984 and apartments £175,417.

Renters can expect to pay from £661pcm for a one-bedroom property up to £1300 for a five-bedroom detached.
