Why Move to Kensington?
Even if you have never visited this very posh part of London you most likely would have heard of its reputation as being amongst the most expensive place to live in the capital.
Bearing testimony to this fact are its concentration of very wealthy residents, many of whom are not actually from the UK but are expats from other countries, most especially France and some who hail from as far as Russia, the Middle East and Asia.
Wedged between Chelsea and Hyde Park the district is surrounded by museums, galleries, and other landmarks such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal College of Art.
With the likes of Harrods and Harvey Nichols on the doorstep it’s no wonder Kensington has earned a reputation as one of the capital’s most desirable neighbourhoods.
Kensington sits in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. Having been given ‘Royal’ status in 1901. It has been home to the monarchy since 1689. Their well- tended gardens at Kensington Palace are open to the public.
The focus of the area is Kensington High Street, a busy commercial centre with many shops, as you would imagine which are typically upmarket.
The high street has several times been declared among London’s best, due to its wide range and number of shops, however this in contention now as large super malls such as Westfields have taken over.
Dominating the area is the period architecture found in many of its commercial and residential properties, the majority of which is European influenced by French and Dutch designs and incredibly expensive.
Set amid pretty squares and tree lined streets certainly adds to Kensington’s affluent atmosphere. However just to purchase a permanent spot to park your car costs in the region of £165,000.
Being in the thick of everything means you can get practically anywhere in central London with ease. Kensington falls within Zone 1 and is served by the Circle and District lines.
Busses are plentiful and regular, serving most of central London. Whilst not advisable, as Kensington tends to be very traffic heavy, but when necessary, the local A4 leads out to the M4 and the A40 also offers access to the west of the UK.
Wherever you live in Kensington, you are never far from nature or culture so a night out on the town offers a myriad of choice with regard to entertainment and the late busses mean you can enjoy that extra glass of wine!
So, if you are one of the lucky people who can actually afford to either purchase or lease a home in Kensington, you are very fortunate indeed and can look forward to having access to the highest standard of living.
Kensington Schools & Education
As those who live in Kensington generally expect the best of everything, education provision is naturally, of the highest standard.
The Kensington & Chelsea Borough Council’s education department finances state schools and there are a number of them in the local area.
The local College Park School and Jack Tizard School both provide education for children with a range of learning disabilities.
For primary aged children there are several “outstanding” schools in the vicinity including St Barnabas and St Philip’s C of E Primary School, Fox Primary School and Our Lady of Victories RC Primary School.
High school aged students can attend the “outstanding” Holland Park School. A highly regarded, coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Holland Park. In 2013, attained academy status.
There are two colleges nearby, Kensington & Chelsea College and St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College although a whole raft of other FE colleges are dotted throughout London.
Seven universities serve the borough directly, and among them is the main campus of the very prestigious Imperial College London.
