Kilmarnock is the second largest town in East Ayrshire, Scotland, with round 46,000 people calling it home. The meandering River Irvine runs through the towns eastern section.
Historically the town has been made famous for several reasons, including the first collection of work by Scottish poet Robert Burns called Poems, which was published in Kilmarnock in 1786 as well as the internationally distributed whisky brand Johnnie Walker which originated in the town in the 19th century.

Kilmarnock Academy is one of the few schools in the world to have educated two Nobel laureates: Alexander Fleming and John Boyd Orr.

Things to do in Kilmarnock
When it comes to entertainment, Kilmarnock and its surrounds will not disappoint. Days out nearby, include museums and art galleries, historic buildings to theme parks, and a huge choice of outdoor adventures.
The region is known for its castles, there are some great ones to visit; Dean Castle and Country Park, Dundonald Castle, Craigie Castle and Rowallan Castle to name a few.
Opened in 1901, the Dick Institute is a 4-star attraction, attracting over 120,000 visitors each year and houses the largest museum and gallery spaces in Ayrshire.
The Institute hosts exhibitions, displays, collections and innovative work by contemporary artists, film makers and young people from the area. This is certainly a great place to spend a few hours.
The Kray Park is the place to head to for open space. Spread across 30 acres and encompassing a huge lake full of ducks and other waterfowl, woodland and open grasslands it is the perfect place to walk, explore and enjoy a picnic.
The Palace Theatre and Grand Hall means that residents have access to plenty of culture and has a varied and full programme throughout the year. Ayrshire’s premier entertainment venue big name bands have performed here such as Kalvin Harris, Primal Scream, Kasabian and the Happy Mondays.
