Why move to Macclesfield?
Known as ‘the gateway to the Peak District’, Macclesfield combines the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, with access to all the amenities and attractions of a lively market town.
The market town was once one of the most important centres for the silk industry, renowned for the skill of its designers and for its richly patterned woven fabrics which are commemorated in the local Silk Museum.
Situated in the county of Cheshire the town enjoys excellent rail connections to the region’s cities and towns and is well placed for those who intend commute to Manchester, Stoke, Birmingham and other northern cities for work.
Perhaps it’s most appealing feature for those families relocating from Greater Manchester and beyond is the wealth of affordable properties on the market.
Several new and exciting house developments are popping up in the centre alongside the existing housing stock which consists mainly of quaint terraced properties.
There are also refurbished apartments perfect for housing ladder climbers and first time-buyers alike.
The town has been criticised in the past for its lack of leisure facilities but plans are being drawn up for a leisure-based re-development in the town centre ensuring a big future ahead for Macclesfield.
Schools & Education
There is in excess of 11 primary schools in the Macclesfield catchment area alone. Of these Gawsworth Primary and Whirley Primary are highly recommended and have both been rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted.
Competition for places in the best secondary schools is fierce and parents are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
Macclesfield is served by four state-funded academies (previously state high schools): Tytherington School, The Macclesfield Academy, Fallibroome Academy and All Hallows Catholic College.
There are also two independent schools, The King’s School which dates from the 16th century and Beech Hall School.
Working in Macclesfield
Once a leader in the making of silk products the economy has moved away from textiles and clothing and now the strongest business sectors are in manufacturing, health, administration and education.
The busy town centre is also a major employer of the local population offering employment in its shops and small businesses.
Several large pharmaceutical companies are also headquartered here such as AstraZeneca and Molplex. To apply for positions in this sector you will need qualifications and skills which include analytical thinking, numeracy and a science-based education.
Other areas to consider and where there is a demand for skills is app developer jobs and PHP developer positions (software developers or web developers).
Many residents choose to commute for work and there are several large cities within a reasonable distance. Manchester is just 20 mins away by train, Birmingham is roughly an hour and Sheffield just over an hour away.
