Leisure activities & Removals Marlborough
The market town of Marlborough is situated in the picturesque rural north-east of Wiltshire. The town has a twice-weekly market; the High Street is one of the widest in the UK and lined on both sides with historic buildings housing an array of interesting independent shops.
There has been a settlement on the site of the town for thousands of years. A 62 feet tumulus (mound of earth) has been dated to approximately 2400BC and legend has it that it is the burial site of Merlin the wizard!
More recently, Marlborough was famous for being the place where coins were minted. Tudor kings hunted for deer and coaches heading west from London stopped to feed and water their horses. The town was certainly at the heart of things in days gone by.
The Merchant’s House is well worth a visit. It is one of the finest 17th century middle-class homes open to visitors in England and can be found on the High Street. It contains a wealth of period features, paintings and artefacts and on-going restoration of both the building and its contents make for an interesting visit for anyone interested in the preservation of old buildings.
High Street Shopping
The High Street is lined with historic buildings and the old Silk Merchants House, holds guided tours 3 days per week. You can step back in time and learn about the building and how it was used in days gone by. There is plenty of accommodation available, excellent shopping and a wide choice of places to eat and things to do, making the town an ideal destination for a long or short break at any time of the year.
Even today the High Street hosts two weekly markets, held on Saturdays and Wednesdays and selling a variety of wares such as food, clothing and plants. This is a great place to visit and a great place to live.
