Why Move to Middlesbrough?
Forming part of the County Borough of Teesside and sitting on the River Tees, Middlesbrough was founded in 1830. At that time there was just one farm and a population of 25. Today Middlesbrough is a vibrant town with a population of around 180,000.
During the Victorian era, Middlesbrough was a major industrial town. Evidence of its past can still be seen in its beautiful Victorian architecture which survived heavy bombings during the Second World War.
Nowadays, the town is quite different. It is no longer reliant on the steel and coal industries as it once was, having re-invented itself through huge investment.
Halfway into a 20-year regeneration programme, almost £30 million has been spent updating and improving various sectors including infrastructure, local shopping areas, schools and leisure facilities. As a result, the economy has drastically improved and there has been a surge in new business.
Residents of Middlesbrough benefit from urban an lifestyle such as shopping and eating out, centred mainly around Baker Street and Bedford Street.
Whilst more rural pursuits are to be found to the south of the town at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park.
Never more than twenty minutes from the East coast of the UK or the beautiful countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors, Middlesbrough is where culture and commerce converge.
Well connected to the rest of the UK and Europe, the town has three airports within 1 hour’s drive away. Its transport links either by road or train offers convenient and quick commuting access to Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and the rest of the country.
Middlesbrough Schools & Education
Living in Middlesbrough provides access to a varied choice of schools when it comes to education.
You can choose from a selection of 10 secondary schools; Macmillan Academy Secondary is highly rated by Ofsted as is River Tees High and Nunthorpe Academy.
Amongst the best primaries is Brambles Primary and Priory Wood with both achieving “outstanding” results following their last inspections.
There are also several colleges and sixth form colleges to choose from, the largest of which is Middlesbrough College. Teaching around 16,000 students, it predominantly provides further education, but also some selected higher education courses too.
Middlesbrough became a university town in 1992; the University of Teesside has more than 20,000 students from all over the UK and some international students. The Uni has recently ranked in the top 5 animation schools and colleges in the UK.

Things to do in Middlesbrough
Like so many places across the midlands, Middlesbrough is a friendly town. Home to a diverse range of high street shops spread over three main shopping centres. For something a little quirkier head to the popular area of Baker Street, here you will find some interesting independent boutiques and gift shops.
There are a host of excellent leisure facilities available in the town such as public parks, cinemas, pubs, clubs, sports facilities, art galleries and museums. There is also access to the beautiful North York Moors National Park which is less than an hour’s drive away.
Spoilt for choice when dining out, Middlesbrough has several Michelin starred restaurants as well as fast food chains. However, no visit to Middlesbrough would complete without trying the local delicacy, the Parmo. Very similar to a schnitzel, Parmo is a breaded port chop or steak and is a firm favourite with locals.

Middlesbrough Property
The good news for property hunters in Middlesbrough is that you get lots for your money. The average price of a home is a very appealing £149,901.
However, in some sought after areas of the town, prices are higher. Even in the very up market village of Broughton, homes very rarely exceed £900,000.
Depending on the style you are looking for, you will find some very affordable semis close to the centre of town. Towards the outskirts in more affluent neighbourhoods there are some lovely period homes available.
Many of the towns newer properties can be found in the docklands area of Middlehaven. As part of Middlesbrough’s regeneration projects some very stylish new apartments have recently been built. These are proving very popular with young professionals who want to live close to the centre of the town.
The rental market is also very active. This is primarily due to the high number of students attending university here. There are currently over 400 homes up for lease many aimed at the student market. Rents range from £173 per month for a room in a shared house, right up to £1820 per month for a five-bedroom property.
