Why Move to Oxfordshire
Centrally located, Oxfordshire has a wealth of modern and historical attributes. The county has major education and tourist industries and is noted for the concentration of performance motorsport companies and facilities.
Oxfordshire is a county full of history, from the ancient Rollright Stones or the Devil’s Quoits stone circles, the region is steeped in legend and mystery.
Towns of note within the county include the ancient market town of Banbury, Kidlington, home to rows of pretty terraced cottages, Henley-on-Thames which was recently voted by The Times as one of the best places to live in the country and Witney with its bustling small town atmosphere.
The county’s cultural capital is Oxford which is home to one of the most famous universities in the UK, the ancient University of Oxford. There is evidence of teaching here as early as 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation after the University of Bologna.
Oxfordshire can also boast that it includes three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty within its county lines.
The Cotswolds, home to the open chalk hills of the North Wessex Downs and the wooded hills of the Chilterns.
The navigable reaches of the Thames wind through from Henley up through Oxford itself and beyond as far as Lechlade-on-Thames. Some lovely rural and riverside properties are found here along the banks of the picturesque river Cherwell.
As with many larger towns which lay close to the capital and have excellent transport links, property in the county can be expensive but there are small pockets where you can grab a bargain and get to work with little effort. Wantage, Carterton and Headington still have average prices which are under £420,000.
It’s no wonder that in 2016, South Oxfordshire was voted as being one of the best places to live for commuters, due to its good local schools, pretty hamlets and perfect village pubs which all provide the perfect break from city life.
Schools & Education
Top of the wish list for families who are relocating with children is good schools. Oxford will not disappoint.
The county has a completely comprehensive education system with 23 independent schools and 35 state secondary schools. Only eight schools do not have a sixth form; these are mostly in South Oxfordshire and Cherwell districts.
Many state primary schools are judged “good” by the government’s education watchdog Ofsted. “outstanding” schools include; Windmill Primary School in Oxford, Ladygrove Park Primary Didcot and Thomas Reade Primary in Abingdon.
One of the best-performing comprehensive secondary schools in the region is the Cherwell School in Oxford which is judged as “outstanding” by Ofsted; and the Matthew Arnold School, also in Oxford, consistently gains above average results.
Oxford’s wide choice of private schools is a big draw for parents. Private schools include; Christ Church Cathedral, Worcester College Choir School, New College School and Magdalen College School.
Oxfordshire is home to two world renowned universities; University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University. Oxford University is made up of 39 constituent colleges, and a range of academic departments.
The university is quoted as among the best higher learning institutions by most international and major national league tables and has taught 28 of the UK’s prime ministers.
