Portishead is a popular coastal town located in North Somerset overlooking the Severn Estuary.
The name Portishead derives from the “port at the head of the river”. The town’s recorded history dates back to Roman times and it has a long history as a fishing port.
As with many of the county’s towns, it has experienced significant changes in the past decade, and has been quoted as being one of the fastest growing towns in the UK, with housing development growing by around 40%.

The town has a population of around 22,000 however, the local council has predicted that due to its very large housing projects, another 8,000 new residents are expected to move to the area over the next few years.
Portishead is well connected with regular bus links to Bristol centre, many locals commute to Bristol and it is very close to the M5 offering easy access to the rest of Somerset and the South West.
Schools & Education

The Unitary Authority of North Somerset provides support for 78 schools, delivering education to approximately 28,000 pupils across the county.
Local infant and primary schools include: High Down Infant and Junior, Portishead Primary, St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary, St. Peter’s C of E Primary and Trinity Anglican Methodist Primary School.
With approximately 1900 pupils, secondary education is provided by Gordano School. In 1999, the school was awarded Specialist Schools Technology College status. Gordano School is Portishead’s only comprehensive school, and it is one of high repute with excellent examination results. It has a long-established reputation for success that has been based on hard work and high standards.
The closest private school is The Downs School in Bristol founded in 1894. It takes pupils from reception until year three in pre-preparatory school and then from year four to year eight in the preparatory school.
Older students have plenty of further education colleges to choose from. Nearby, Bristol has two FE institutions, City of Bristol College and South Gloucestershire & Stroud College as well as two theological colleges: Trinity College, and Bristol Baptist College.
Things to do in Portishead
When looking for a place to relax, eat out or enjoy a glass of wine with friends, Portishead Marina is a popular choice offering a great variety of bars, restaurants, and cafes.
The marina offers pleasant views of yachts and sailing boats it has become a particularly favourite destination in the summer months both with locals and the yachting set.
Children will love Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. A unique hands-on zoo located just outside Bristol and set in over 100 acres of beautiful countryside. With over 100 different species kiddies can get up close with animals.
History lovers are also catered for. Oakham Treasures and the National Trust properties Tyntesfield and Clevedon Court are all very interesting places to visit.
Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve This is a 150-acre nature reserve on the edge of the Severn Estuary between Portishead and Royal Portbury Dock. Nestled between housing on one side and industry on the other it is a crucial green buffer. It gives people access to green spaces and provides a vital haven for wildlife.
