The town of Rawtenstall ies 17 miles from Manchester, 22 miles from Preston and 45 miles from the county town of Lancaster. It also sits very pleasantly in the Rossendale Valley between the West Pennine Moors and the main range of the Pennines.
Bank Street is the main thoroughfare in the town, and here you will find some well-known grocery stores such as Tesco, Morrisons and Asda. Green space is abundant and far away from the concrete jungle, Rawtenstall is surrounded by stunning scenery. Every area within the whole Valley has a park of one form or another within easy reach, ranging from Stubbylee Park in Bacup at the east end of the Valley, through Whitaker Park in the centre of Rawtenstall.
The grounds of Whitaker Park consist of the former house of the mill owner George Hardman, set in extensive landscaped gardens. The house now contains the Whitaker which is Rossendale’s Museum and Art Gallery, whilst the gardens and surrounding land are laid out as a public park. The museum contains exhibits of local history and displays of the house as it was when it was originally built.
Set amidst the panoramic views of Rawtenstall’s beautiful countryside, Marl Pits Leisure Centre offers sport and fitness activities for all the family. A large swimming pool and a range of fitness classes, along with a well-equipped gym, is perfect for those wanting to keep healthy and fit.
There are plenty of local clubs to get involved with, great for making new friends. The town has its own boxing, rugby and cricket clubs, all of which are always on the lookout for new members.

As good education is a crucial requirement for parents new to the area, it is nice to know that the town has several quality primary schools and high schools. The standard of schooling in the area even led to Rossendale being named as one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, in 2014.
Primaries include; Water Primary, St Paul’s C of E Primary and Cloughfold Primary Schools which were all rated as being “good” by Ofsted.
Alder Grange Community & Technology School and All Saints’ Catholic High School also both having been awarded a grading of “good” following their last Ofsted inspections.
Located in nearby Waterfoot, the traditional grammar school, Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School takes part of its name from the town, is highly regarded and has achieved “outstanding” results according to Ofsted.
