Why Move to Southport?
Southport is a market and seaside town, located approximately 19 from Lancaster and 16 miles from Liverpool. The town lies on the River Kent and falls within the county of Cumbria.
Historically, the area was sparsely populated and was dominated by sand dunes; however, during the 19th Century, the area became popular with tourists due easy its access from the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the town rapidly grew. This expansion coincided with the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era.
Boasting a beautiful coastline, Southport is surrounded by natural beauty perfect for raising a family as there is so much to do. There are also excellent beaches at Formby and Ainsdale, both of which have a Blue Flag award. Its pier, a Grade II listed structure, is the second-longest in Britain. Napoléon III famously lived in exile in the town before returning to France, where Lord Street reportedly inspired his re-design of the Parisian boulevards.
Getting around is best by rail: Liverpool is 42 minutes away and Manchester only 75 minutes. By road, it is 25 minutes to the M6 and 40 minutes to central Liverpool.
As a seaside town, Southport has a long history of leisure and recreation and its local economy is still heavily dependent on tourism. Following much regeneration, the town has diversified with annual events, shopping and conferences to attract even more visitors and residents.
