Preparing for Your Move
Moving to Frankfurt or anywhere else in Germany is a very different process than moving in the UK.
When moving domestically most of us will pack up and take everything with us to our new home.
However, when moving across the continent you may not get that luxury and a part-load move where your household belongings are delivered in separate consignments may be more suitable.
The use of storage facilities may also be beneficial if you are moving short-term or want to ‘scope an area out’ before moving there permanently. Having the option to place your items in storage and then have them delivered at a later time allows for greater flexibility.
There’s also the navigation of customs and the organising of paperwork for each family member.
Having an experienced removals company to advise and help prepare your move for you will help make the process run much smoother.
White & Company specialise in moving personal effects to Frankfurt and our fully trained staff will take good care of your belongings and advise you every step of the way.
Having said all this, it certainly pays to be organised. With that in mind below are some useful tips to help prepare you for your move to Frankfurt:
Tips
- Obtain the right documentation: Citizens from Britain (or any EU country) do not need a visa to enter Germany just a valid passport. Note however this could change post-Brexit. You should allow plenty of time and have documentation to hand that proves you are a long-term resident. This includes your registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) and correspondence concerning social insurance contributions and work or rental contracts.
- Research where you want to live: Finding the right neighbourhood is essential. There are 46 neighbourhoods in Frankfurt, each one of them having their own advantages as a place to live in. Are you going to commute, or do you want to live in the middle of the city? Being central is the preferred option for most young professionals but those with children may prefer to live further out.
- Rent before you buy: Renting a home to begin with gives you a chance to explore the neighbourhoods before you commit to a purchase. Typically, you need to pay 2 or 3 months-rent up front as a form of deposit.
- Consider if public healthcare will suffice for your family or whether you’ll need private cover instead.
- Secure school places: If you have children you need to make some decisions about schooling including what sort of school. There are local, private and international schools, each with their own merits and considerations. Which one you choose will largely depend on their ages as much younger children can integrate more easily than teenagers in a foreign country.
- Vaccinate and microchip your pets and obtain the necessary paperwork they need to move with you.
- Learn the lingo: Through expat websites, you may find that you can sign-up for a free trial class with others who are also learning German. Alternatively you might want to try a free app or subscription learning service such as Babbel or Duolingo.
