    Customs Information

When you move to a new country, and are importing used household effects, there are certain essential documents that customs will need in order to clear your effects. Like most worldwide countries Malta has very strict importation regulations and consequences if regulations are not adhered to.

The owner of the goods will have up to 6 months to take up residence and appear before Customs to finalise. All goods must be used to avoid tax and duties. Any newly purchased items will be subject to import taxes and duties and a purchase receipt will need to be produced to customs. All shipments are physically inspected and shipments must arrive within six months.

To ensure that you do not incur any extra charges due to customs delays, it is imperative that you familiarise yourself with Malta’s customs regulations. White and Company can also assist with this but it is well worth doing your own research to ensure there are no nasty surprises.

    Why Move to Malta?

Sandwiched between Southern Europe and North Africa, Malta is an archipelago of small islands set in the sparkling Mediterranean sea with a unique blend of Italian, Arabic and English influences.

The sun-soaked island haven enjoys 300 days of sun a year and is strongly favoured by British retirees who treasure its slower pace of life, warmer climate and its fabled connections to Britain.

With English widely spoken Malta is also a great place to do business and appeals to young professionals and freelancers who are attracted to the eclectic mix of relaxation, discovery and adventure on offer.

The country’s recent accession to the EU has brought with it renewed prosperity and despite rising costs in recent years, it is still far more affordable compared to the UK and its other Western European counterparts.

Malta may be one of the smallest countries in the world with a population of just 412,000 but its landscapes seriously pack a punch.

A mixture of rocky stretches of coastline and sheltered bays with clear waters and golden sands, provide ample opportunity for scuba-diving, yachting, fishing, and various other water-sports.

Malta also enjoys a rich cultural heritage with no shortage of UNESCO heritage sites, including the stunning architecture of baroque cathedrals and megalithic temples.

The capital city, Valetta has been designated a European Capital of Culture for 2018 and will play host to an extensive programme of over 400 events throughout the year.

You can expect plenty of ‘festas’, traditional island festivals which combine music, dance and street art. For those looking to see out their days in the sun, with a slower pace of life, pleasant food and even greater company you can do far worse than the Maltese islands.

The country’s past links to Britain provide for smoother acclimatisation and a wealth of opportunities just waiting to be unlocked.

    Working in Malta

With attractive corporate taxes, new business and professional opportunities await many expats in Malta with international companies now setting up their headquarters here, particularly Sliema. Currently there are vacancies in the areas of finance, business and IT. iGaming is also a massive growth industry not only in Malta but worldwide.

The island also attracts many international investors and private corporations taking advantage of the relaxed tax system. In recent years this has led to a rapid growth in the financial services industry and Malta has now become one of the leading financial services centres in the world.

    Visas

Malta is in the EU which means all British citizens are permitted to work in Malta. Most employers request a certificate of good conduct available from your local Police force. If you plan to remain in Malta for more than 3 months, you must contact the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs to apply for residency. The Maltese Government will issue you an identity card once you are registered.

    Property In Malta

Accommodation is plentiful in Malta. There is a good choice of high-quality homes at attractive prices in both finished form as well as developments under construction in sought-after districts such as Pendergartens in St Julians and Fort Cambridge in Sliema.

Properties are quite affordable in comparison to many other comparable parts of Europe such as Portugal and Cyprus and EU citizens who intend to make the property their main home do not require a permit.

Before you decide to purchase a property, you would be wise however to enlist the services of a good notary who can help you navigate the sometimes complicated legal process.

You can expect to pay around €2,721 (£2,384) per square metre for an apartment close to the city and around €1,857 (£1,626) for a similar property on the outskirts of town.

Over the last year the rental market has boomed in Malta and several people are reporting prices higher and higher rental costs.

The Maltese Government is even considering intervention in the market to help offset higher costs. Having said that, costs are still far more affordable than most places in the UK.

If you are renting a one bedroomed apartment in the popular areas of St Julian’s or Valetta you can expect to pay upwards of €751 (£658) per month. For those prepared to live outside of the major towns and cities, you can easily find a newly furnished 2-bedroom flat for as little as €500 per month.

    Schools

Malta was a former British colony and expats will find its education system very familiar.

Most private schools in Malta are affiliated with the Catholic Church and as a rule, church schools do not charge fees. Parents will be expected to pay for school supplies and make a donation each year. There are also several good independent schools, although these do tend to be very expensive.

    Healthcare

Each country’s health system is different and might not include all the things you would expect to get free of charge from the NHS. The Belgian healthcare system is one of the best in Europe.

As soon as you move to Belgium, you must register with a state insurance scheme called a mutuelle or ziekenfonds. The system is divided into state and private sectors, with fees payable in both, funded by a combination of Belgian social security contributions and health insurance funds.

With mandatory health insurance, patients are free to choose their own medical professionals and places of treatment. You can also choose to take out further private health insurance cover and there are plenty of institutions with health plans to suit all personal circumstances, here are a few:
