Located in the Occitanie region in the south of France, Montpellier is student-friendly city with a more relaxed working culture than Paris and Marseille but still strong nonetheless.
It’s café culture and artisan bakeries personify the archetypical French lifestyle that so many expats come to emulate.
Below are some of the most popular areas for expats to live:
Antigone –Elegant, stylish and upmarket, Antigone is a popular spot for working professionals and families with a kilometre-long pedestrianised zone. Located next to the historic old town and the River Le, homes in this area are very expensive.
Les Beaux-Arts district – Just north-east of the historic centre in Montpellier, this hipster area feels more like a village and is teething with students, artists and locals.
Gambetta – An upcoming and sociable area with cheaper than average properties. There is lots to do and because of the strong North African influence, there is no lack of markets.
Boutonnet – Another popular student hideout. Located north of downtown Montpellier it is a relatively new neighbourhood. Rue du Faubourg Boutonnet is at its heart and it is here that you’ll find shops, cafes and bars and cheap apartments.
Arceaux – Similar to Les Beaux-Arts, it too has a village feel but it is more popular with young families and is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Montpellier. Its historic centre has a regular market held under the beautiful aqueduct arches.
European citizens can attend and receive medical services from any French doctor using their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if they are visiting France temporarily.
For those moving permanently or longer than three months you must register with a primary doctor (médecins traitant).
To register with a doctor in France you will need to complete a form and return it to your doctor who will register with the local Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM).
Montpellier’s location on the Mediterranean coast means that the city can offer visitors a temperate climate and more sunny days than most other French cities.
Between spring and autumn is a beautiful time with temperatures ranging between 18 – 22 degrees.
The summer months (June – August) are hot and temperatures regularly reach the low to mid 30-degree mark.
The coldest month is January, but even then, the temperature rarely dips below 5 or 6 degrees.
Laws vary depending on the type of property purchased, but there are no restrictions on foreigners buying property in Montpellier.

Decide which area you’d like to live in.
Find a property that matches your needs and budget.
Engage a French estate agent to draw up the agreement between buyer and seller (Note the buyer covers all of the legal fees and taxes, which usually amount to 7.5 % of the purchase price).
Sign a compromis de vente – a preliminary agreement between both parties.
Engage a notaire (lawyer) to carry out the relevant checks including land registry, ownership rights, boundaries, and rights of way.
Sign an acte de vente (a sale contract).
Montpellier is a relatively compact city, so getting around is easy. There are numerous ways to travel, including walking, bicycle, bus, train, tram and taxis.
The public transport system is comprehensive and reasonably priced. Bus transport conveniently uses the same tickets and day passes as Montpellier’s trams. In general, tram transport frequently travels during the day, but not as often during the evening.
Montpellier St. Roch is the main train station, from here you can get to most major towns and cities including Paris, Lille, Lyon, Valence and Nice.
Montpellier Méditerranée Airport is situated on the outskirts of the city. The airport operates services to the major airports in France and the rest of Europe.
