    Why Move to Sweden?

Whether it be stargazing across the cloud-free skies at the Northern lights or enjoying the social tradition of Fika (coffee & cake), Swedish culture and life extends well beyond just meatballs and Ikea flat pack furniture.

Sweden is a progressive and forward thinking nation with excellent job prospects. It frequently scores high on indexes for quality of life and gender equality, making it an attractive destination for British expats.

An outdoors lifestyle is also part of the appeal. ‘Allemansrätten’, known as the right of public access, gives everyone the right to enjoy Sweden’s outdoors and roam freely – even on private land – and is actually written into the constitution.

Sweden has a reputation for being expensive and on average, consumer items and groceries are dearer than in the UK. However, according to online consumer price database, Numbeo, Sweden ranks 15th on the cost of living index globally (the UK comes in 23rd) and is more affordable than is led to believe.

    Transporting My Effects To Sweden

Moving can be a very stressful experience but White & Company, with its eighty years of experience in the removal industry, can help make the whole process a lot less traumatic. White & Company move thousands of families around the globe each year and have branches all over the UK. We can arrange a free no obligation quotation, which is carried out by one of our qualified surveyors, who will be able to answer any of the questions and concerns you may have. The surveyor will undertake a thorough survey to determine the volume of effects you wish to move, following which you will receive a written quotation.

    Popular Areas in Sweden

Once you have made the decision to move, some of the questions you have may include:

    • Which area of Sweden would suit me best?
    • Do I want to live in the city on the coast or in the countryside?
    • How much will the property cost?

With Sweden being a short flight away from the UK, you can easily contact some of the local estate agents in your areas of interest. They will be happy to provide assistance, arrange viewings and help you with your questions and concerns regarding the legal aspects of buying property abroad.

    Working & Living in Sweden

As Sweden is a member of the EU citizens of the UK do not currently require a visa. If you plan on living in Sweden you will need to register with the Swedish Population Register and obtain a personal identity number (personnummer). For more information on how to do this see: everythingsweden.com/personnummer-sweden/

The Swedish labour market always needs skilled people, particularly in the ICT and engineering sectors. Wages are competitive and holiday allowances are generous.

Swedes have a reputation for not being afraid to do things differently and recently conducted a two-year trial of 6 hour working days. As such you can expect a calmer, more measured approach to life in Sweden.

Taxes to subsidize generous policies like parental leave are quite high, but as a result it is widely considered to be a pretty good place to be a parent.

Employers are required to offer 16 months of paid parental leave per child, with your job available when you return and sick leave benefit. Such policies have led to the rise in so-called ‘latte dads’ as more men are encouraged to take time off.

    Property

At first glance the housing market in Sweden can appear to be quite competitive and it is often relatively difficult to find adequate housing whether you are renting or buying.

Sweden also has one of the lowest house building rates in Europe, making it a more expensive place on average to purchase a property than the UK.

However, it might actually be more affordable than it seems at first glance when you take into account the fact that mortgage rates are around 40% lower and wage packets are generally larger.

Living in a big city like Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö, as opposed to a smaller city such as Halmstad, is also likely to have a significant bearing on the cost of property.

    Currency Conversion

The official currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK). Most credit and debit cards are accepted in Sweden and ATMs can easily be found across the country.

There is a good selection of local and international banks and opening a bank account is a simple and straightforward process.

When moving overseas making sure you get the best exchange rate possible is essential. White & Company has an exclusive arrangement with an FX Firm.

Simply call us on Tel: 01494-857672 or follow this link to see what additional monies you will receive compared to using your high street bank and to set up a free account.

    Travel

Public transport is used frequently in Sweden and is an affordable option. There are various types of transport available and tram networks operate in many of the main cities.

High speed train networks and an extensive array of ferries can take you to neighbouring Scandinavian countries and beyond.

If you are bringing your car with you check to see whether you can use your current licence or if you’ll need a new one. It is also good practice to familiarise yourself with Swedish road rules, signs and parking regulations.

    Schools

In Sweden, school for children aged 6 to 19 is free of charge. In addition to paid leave, the government also provides an additional monthly child allowance (barnbidrag) until a child reaches the age of 16.

The free education continues into university for students from the EU, but fees apply to students from outside the EU/EEA.

    Healthcare

Compared to the NHS in the UK, the largely state funded Swedish healthcare system does incur some additional charges. State subsidies are on offer however to make these and other aspects of life affordable.

Annual top-ups to see a doctor are unlikely to exceed £100 but you may wish to consider private healthcare depending on your circumstances.

    Local Information

Swedes are widely rated as world number two at English as a second language. Having said that you will find it hard to get a job without at least a basic grasp of the language.

Signing up for Swedish for immigrants (SFI) or undergoing a course on a language app like Duolingo could be a step in the right direction.

Its also a good idea to check with Swedish Customs if you’re unsure of the rules regarding bringing a specific item with you – particularly food, medicine, tobacco and alcohol.
