Why move to USA?
As a country founded by immigrants, it will perhaps come as no surprise to find that the USA continues to be one of the most popular expat destinations in the world. Many expats from all over the world come to the USA in search of the ‘American Dream’ of greater economic opportunities and a better life for their family.
Despite the negative impact of the global economic recession, the USA continues to be the world’s largest economy by GDP and Americans continue to have the highest average household and employee income among developed nations.
The sheer size of the nation means that climate, communities and living standards can vary drastically depending on which US State you are in. This increased size also tends to mean property sizes are far bigger and cheaper compared with most developed nations in Europe.
Social integration is said to be made easier for Brits thanks, in part, to shared history and values. However, there are some important differences be aware of. Religion and patriotism play a massive part in American society for one. The mix between high educational fees and the absence of universal health coverage is also unsettling for many. With an entrepreneurial spirit and culture of independence however, the USA continues to entice expats from all corners of the globe.

Healthcare in USA
One of the biggest shocks for British expats moving to the USA is the absence of universal medical care in the US. Unless your employer, as part of your relocation, pays for healthcare you will be expected to pay out for coverage for you and your family.
There are state-funded assistance programmes in place – Medicare and Medicaid – for the disabled, poor and young. However, most will have to pay out for their own coverage and medical bills are often very expensive.

Working & Living in USA
Since the tragic events of 9/11, changes to US police have resulted in far more selective immigration regulations, making obtaining a visa to work in the country far harder than before.
If you want to work in the US you can apply for several types of visa, including:
- H1-B non-immigrant visa – suitable for skilled, educated people working for a sponsoring employer in specific occupations such as maths, engineering, law or medicine
- H-2B — designed for temporary non-agricultural workers and available for foreign workers doing seasonal work where there is a shortage of local workers
- J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program — aimed at people looking to study, teach or carry out research
The ‘green card’ (I-551) is the most desired visa and grants permanent residency. You can obtain a green card through a job or job offer, provided there aren’t enough US workers who can do the job. There is also the annual green card lottery where each year 55,000 people win permanent residence.
Working in USA
Americans value hard work and people often work up to 40 hours per week with annual leave as low as two weeks in certain jobs.
The job market suffered during the recession and a number of key industries, including the manufacturing and factory industries at the heart of the ‘rust belt’ region of the USA has continued to be adversely affected.
However, unemployment is falling, and opportunities are becoming available once again. Most financial jobs tend to be stationed on the East Coast cities, such as New York and Boston. Whereas, innovative technology start-ups, such as those in the famous Silicon Valley of California, are found on the West Coast, in cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle.
Other areas where the USA job market is in need of workers, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, are nursing, accountancy, software development, retail and mechanics.

American Schools & Education
The US boasts some of the most successful educational institutes in the world. The Ivy League institutions of Yale and Harvard are two of the most prestigious and well-regarded universities in the world. Obtaining a place is highly competitive, not to mention incredibly expensive, unless a place is awarded through scholarship.
There are a large number of good local public schools for English speaking expats to send their children. These schools are free and it gives expat children the opportunity to have more interaction with children in the local neighbourhood. Competition for places is fierce however and is usually determined according to geographic location.
There are also a number of international schools and colleges that offer a very good education for all. Students at international schools in the USA can be taught in English and a foreign language and can follow the curriculum back home. However, good international schools can often have long waiting lists and are expensive, costing on average around 14,000 per year.
