Why Move to Torquay?
Torquay town was traditionally a fishing village and its economy was geared around local agriculture. In later years it developed into a popular seaside resort, fashionable with the Royal Navy and wealthy Victorians.
One of its most notable residents was Agatha Christie, who was born in the town, and for which there is a tour dedicated in her honour. Perhaps its most notable fame was through the popular TV series, Fawlty towers, which was fictionally based in the town.
Despite the antics of the eccentric Basil Fawlty (played by John Cleese) and his hapless Spanish waiter, Manuel, Torquay remains the top seaside destination, as voted for on TripAdvisor. With the rise in UK ‘staycations’, that is holidays in the UK, the town is once again on the rise.
The whole of Devon is renowned for its beautiful countryside. Ranging from spectacular coastlines and harbours, rolling hills and valleys and the magnificent Dartmoor National Park, it is unsurprising that so many people choose to live in this wonderful part of the country.
Torquay is connected to the national rail network with trains through to London, the Midlands and the North. The newly completed South Devon Link Road will greatly reduce journey times and increase the option of commuting to larger towns in the area.
The town itself is set in one of only seven UNESCO global geoparks in the UK and is increasing in both popularity and size. Multi-million-pound investment has recently been set aside for the regeneration of its waterside area. With that in mind, Torquay is very much a case of watch this space.
Schools & Education
Torbay is one of just 22 local authorities in the UK that can claim that not one of its primary schools falls below government expectations. Its secondaries sadly do not have such a good track record but there are still some good high schools available.
Torbay has three state-funded grammar schools, (Torquay Boy’s, Torquay Girls’ and Churston Ferrers, a co-ed grammar school) all with very good reputations.
For further education there’s South Devon College.
With more than 1,000 apprentices and 600 employers actively engaged on apprenticeship schemes every year, it is a popular choice for local young people keen on learning a trade.
Working in Torquay
As a seaside town the service industry is the town’s biggest employment sector by far.
According to a recent Office of National Statistics survey, 92% of employee jobs are in service positions. The town welcomes thousands of visitors each year and for those seeing employment in hospitality, leisure and tourism Torquay is a great place to be.
Improvements for the future have been set out in the Torbay Economic Strategy 2013-2018, which aims to upgrade the marine economy and the introduce new visitor attractions to help bolster the local economy.
The Torwood Street development has been described as a ‘game-changer’ for Torquay.
In total £32 million has been earmarked for new developments to create fresh employment opportunities, including the building of new hotels, offices, bars and restaurants. Work is set to commence in September 2018 and is predicted to take two years to complete.
Things to Do in Torquay
Torquay has an arching sandy beach bay which leads onto the delightful marina at the foot of the town centre.
The town caters for all ages and is home to some top family attractions, including a host of water sports and a range of award-winning restaurants, catered by celebrity chefs.
It is a perfect base from which to explore the other towns and villages in the area such as Paignton and Brixham and Dawlish. Each with its own unique charm and character.
