    Why Move to Weymouth?

A common destination for people from London and the Home Counties, more and more people are moving to Weymouth in search of a life which offers a much healthier work/life balance.

Positioned on the south coast of the UK at the mouth of the River Wey, known as England’s Bay of Naples, Weymouth is a classic example of a British seaside town.

In 2017, Weymouth beach was named as being the UK’s “best”, praised for offering traditional seaside attractions such as Punch and Judy and donkey rides, as well as live music and free summer firework displays.

Weymouth has a wonderfully impressive Georgian seafront, overlooking a long arc of golden sand. The harbour area is still a hub of activity for local fisherman and leisure boating and both residents and visitors make the most of these attributes, during the summer months especially.

During the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Weymouth hosted the sailing events and has been left with a legacy of excellent water sports facilities and improved transport links.

The A354 and the local bus service combined with Weymouth railway station (which connects with London Waterloo, a journey of around 3 hours) makes travelling around the region really accessible.

A very striking landscape with attractions such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, two of the most photographed places in Dorset sit side by side on the coast. The Isle of Portland features plenty of natural wonders to discover.

Tourism plays a major part in Weymouth’s economy, so it is unsurprising that many of the available employment opportunities in Weymouth are linked to the tourism sector.

As more Brits take the opportunity to holiday at home these days, combined with the influx of new residents, numbers of which have increased year on year, the towns economy has never been in better shape.

With a relatively low cost of living and cheaper property prices compared to other large towns and cities in the south of England, and Weymouth’s wonderful location next to areas of outstanding beauty, it is little wonder that this part of the UK has increased so much in popularity over the past few years.

    Weymouth Schools & Education

As the continuous flow of new arrivals set up home in Weymouth, among some of their concerns is likely to be whether education standards are on a par when compared for example, to education provision in London.

Weymouth may not have quite as much choice; however, standards are generally very good. Additional benefits are that class sizes are often smaller, a real positive especially with younger children.

Among primary schools of note in Weymouth are Beechcroft St Paul’s and Southill, both “outstanding” says Ofsted.

Well regarded secondary schools include Wyvern Academy. Some secondary and A-Level students commute to Dorchester to attend The Thomas Hardye School. A mainstream, co-ed state funded senior school which is highly regarded in the area and consistently achieves very high exam results.

Westfield Arts College is a special, state funded junior and senior school which has been awarded Ofsted’s highest rating of “outstanding”.

Budmouth College has a sixth form centre and Weymouth College in Melcombe Regis nearby, is a further education college which has around 7,500 students. The college is part of The University of Plymouth Colleges Network.

    Things to do in Weymouth

If you like to keep yourself busy in your down time, Weymouth is the place to be.
A packed all year-round events program including all manner of festivals is available. The Seafood Festival is one of the most popular. There is always something to see in summer and in the winter months too.

Fossil hunting along the sandy beaches on the Jurassic coastline is just the start of the awesome things to do in Weymouth. Everyone loves to find a fossil, many of the larger ones uncovered are displayed in the local museum.

The famous Dorset Seafood Festival is held annually in Weymouth Harbour. It is a celebration of great seafood and showcases the best of British produce. The festival is now in its 13th year and takes place each July.

One of the busiest features is the Jurassic Skyline. A huge tower featuring a circular covered platform which rises up like a fairground ride and rotates slowly giving visitors a view right across the English Channel on a clear day reaching along the coast to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

Weymouth’s esplanade is a wonderful place to wander along in all weathers. Used by cyclists and keep fit enthusiasts, there is always something to see and plenty of places to pop in for a hot drink in the colder months and an ice cream in the summer.

Weymouth Sea Life and Adventure Park is always a big hit with families. Learn more of life under the waves and the species that call the sea their home. Walk through the under the ocean tunnel; enjoy thrilling rides and even take part in feeding sessions!

Nothe Fort is an award-winning visitor attraction offering low-cost entry and great value come rain or shine. Built by the Victorians to protect Portland Harbour, it is one of the best-preserved forts of its kind.

A day on the beach is always a hit. There are plenty of interesting activities to amuse the children; Donkey rides, puppet shows, amusement arcades and sand building competitions are just a few of the fun happenings.

Weymouth’s sheltered bay offers a shallow gradual sloping seabed and clean waters, perfect conditions for both little swimmers and water sports enthusiasts to enjoy.
