Why Move to Yeovil
Yeovil (the name means ‘town on the river’), is situated in the county of Somerset. It lies around 21 miles from Shaftesbury and 27 miles from Taunton.
Once a strategic position for the Romans, a busy farming centre in medieval times and then a centre for glove making in the 1800’s, (Yeovil Town Football Club’s nickname is the Glovers). Yeovil is now a busy, active country town.
The Somerset town is deceptively big and engaging. It might only have a population of just over 40,000 but the town is still home to professional football club Yeovil Town, boasts several impressive theatres and cinemas and has a compact town centre packed with cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs.
Away from its centre there are several beautiful country parks offering green space to residents and visitors, just minutes from the town.
Yeovil also boasts excellent transport links including 2 railway stations with direct services to London Waterloo from Yeovil Junction Station, a journey of 2.30 hours. Whilst for driving, the town is conveniently close to the A303 and A3088.
The town has a strong employment base, especially in manufacturing and aviation which features highly. Companies such as AgustaWestland, BAE Systems, Honeywell Aerospace and the Royal Naval Air Station are based in or around the town.
Looking to the future, the councils “Somerset Growth Plan” predicts that jobs in Yeovil are expected to grow by up to 300 a year between 2014 and 2030. The purpose of the forward-thinking Growth Plan is to attract and guide investment; to overcome barriers; and maximise sustainable growth from local opportunities, benefiting Somerset’s communities, businesses and residents.
If you want to live in a fine old English country town with but with all the modern facilities you need, it would be hard to beat Yeovil.
Schools & Education
Education is of course an especially important consideration when you relocate to a new town. Yeovil provides a good choice of schooling for all ages.
There are seven state primaries close to the centre of Yeovil. Of these five are said by Ofsted to be “good”, whilst Pen Mill Infant and Nursery Academy requires improvement.
Huish Primary School is the only one to have been lauded by Ofsted for their achievements and gained the highest rating of “outstanding”.
Fiveways Special School also received a status of “outstanding” by Ofsted. A school for pupils aged 4-19 years with severe profound and multiple learning difficulties.
Fairmead School is a great choice for both secondary education and sixth form. Preston School and The Park School are also viable options for secondary schools.
Further education in Yeovil is mainly offered by Yeovil College, with land-based studies available through a Yeovil centre of Bridgwater College, and some provision through private providers.
The town also gives residents access to higher education via the University Centre Yeovil. The degree-awarding body for this university is mainly Bournemouth University, with University of the West of England offering some additional courses.
For private education, the Park School near the centre of the town, is a coeducational independent school for day students and boarders.
Things to do in Yeovil
Getting out and about in your spare time is important. Yeovil is situated close to the border of Dorset with easy access to some of the most beautiful rural and coastal areas in the UK, ideal for outdoor activities.
The town also has a fantastic range of leisure and sporting facilities within easy reach including a cinema and bowling alley at Yeo Leisure Park, the Swan and Octagon theatres, rugby club and football club, sports centre and a golf driving range all give residents plenty of choice.
Host to several fine open public spaces, Yeovil has a number of well-maintained parks and gardens dotted around the town centre.
The award-winning Ham Hill Country Park has Green Flag status. It has far reaching views across Somerset and the Mendip Hills. The area includes meadows and woodland each unique and each has something different to offer. A wonderful place to spend time for all ages.
Yeovil Recreational Centre and Athletics Arena is a favourite location. Not only does the centre host sporting events, but its a fantastic space also to take part in all sorts of activities from picnics on the grass to its huge children’s play park complete with zip wires. There is a pitch and putt and a crazy golf course too. When you tire, there is a café selling all manner of tasty snacks and drinks.
Wincanton Racecourse is well within easy reach of the town. Spend a day at the races. There is a whole annual fixture with all sorts of interesting events to attend. Go the whole hog and experience the VIP treatment; wine, dine and have a flutter, great fun.

You will find a good assortment of housing stock across the town both older properties and plenty of new builds too.
The majority of sales in Yeovil during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £179,699 up by 5% compared to 2020 prices.
Property prices are substantially cheaper in Yeovil than other towns in the area such as Sherborne and Taunton and for this reason demand has grown in recent years.
You can expect to pay £345,000 for a detached home, £246,000 for a semi, £218,000 for a terraced home and £138,000 for a one-bedroom flat.
