Why Move to Lancashire?
Lancashire is a county of contrasting landscapes and a diverse heritage. The region has a population of approximately 1,449,300 and covers an area of 1,189 square miles.
Its county town is Lancaster although its administrative centre is found in Preston. It is home to the well-known seaside towns of Morecambe Bay and Blackpool while Arnside and Silverdale are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The history of Lancashire began with its founding in the 12th century but its emergence as a major commercial region came during the Industrial Revolution, with Liverpool and Manchester growing into the largest cities in the surrounding area.
Despite its industrial past, Lancashire still offers its residents plenty of opportunity to enjoy country living, with a surprising 80 per cent of the county officially classed as rural.
The county is also home to longest canal in Britain, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which flows through large parts of Lancaster. The Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Beauty, covers a huge portion of the region and is the size of New York City!
Some of Lancashire’s larger towns include; Lancaster, Blackpool, Blackburn and Preston. Visitor numbers to Lancashire increase year after year making tourism an important contributor to its economy.
The economic impact generated by these visitors is valued at £4.41 billion. Other employers in the county are in the sectors of defence, nuclear power and electronics.
Travel links across the county are excellent, with the M6 running from north to south, past Lancaster and Preston. The M55 connects Preston to Blackpool and the West Coast Main Line provides direct rail links with London, Glasgow and other major cities, with stations located at Preston and Lancaster.
Schools & Education
Lancashire has a mostly comprehensive educational system. Not including sixth form colleges, there are 77 state schools and 24 independent schools. Many of these schools are religiously affiliated, including various Church of England and Catholic faith schools.
The Clitheroe area in particular has a good range of modern secondary schools. Sixth form provision is limited with only the Fylde and Lancaster districts having a number of schools with sixth forms, with the rest depending on FE colleges and sixth form colleges.
There are only four state Grammars and competition for places is high. Kirkham Grammar achieved significantly impressive GCSE results which well exceeded national averages. Pupils attending St Anne’s Grammar School also did notably well with their GCSE results, three-quarters of candidates gained an A*- C grade in at least five subjects.
Seven colleges in the county offer children access to higher education courses and Lancashire is home to four universities: Lancaster University, the University of Central Lancashire, Edge Hill University and the Lancaster campus of the University of Cumbria.
Things to do in Lancashire
As befits a large county there is a huge choice of leisure activities to enjoy.
The unique, wildlife rich Morecambe Bay in the north has been a popular tourist destination for many years. Apart from the beautiful sandy beach, there are other interesting things to do in Morecambe.
The Cocoa Hearts Chocolate Studio is great fun for all the family, with workshops to suit all budgets, you will be taught by an expert chocolatier how to create and design all sorts of tasty chocolates and fillings along with practical advice to re-create the tasty treats at home.
Morecambe Bay is also well known for its amazing sunsets and there is an incredible range of exhilarating outdoor activities to partake in. From sailing, to powered paragliding, parachuting, windsurfing, mountain biking, horse riding, and kitesurfing, there really is an activity for everyone.
The world-famous seaside town of Blackpool with its iconic Tower sits in the west of the county. Blackpool is the entertainment capital of Lancashire and is jam-packed with theme parks, activities and rides. It is also home to the renowned Blackpool Tower Ballroom, which plays host to Strictly Come Dancing once a year.
The undeniably beautiful fells and moorland of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers 312 square miles of rural Lancashire. The Forest is dotted with charming stone villages, some of which date as far back as pre-historic times.
Lancashire is also rich in historic buildings and attractions. The Cistercian abbey ruins on the banks of the River Ribble at Sawley are maintained by the English Heritage and are the perfect spot for a picnic. Lancaster Castle and Samlesbury Hall are also both incredibly interesting historical sites and offer an insight into the county’s fascinating past.
Within an easy travelling distance are the amazing cities of Liverpool and Manchester where you can immerse yourself in all manner of touristy pursuits.

Due to the outer rural villages, there are a massive assortment of rural farms and barns with and without land that range in value. Whether you require a small £50,000 terraced property in need of renovation all the way to a multi-million pounds dream property, Lancashire will have something for you.
There are thousands of homes for sale right across the county at this current time. It is possible to purchase a home for as little as £20,000 in Blackpool or £20,300 in Morecambe. However, the average price for property in Lancashire stood at £173,492 in December 2019, lower than the national average of £217,663.
